GM Explores Windows of Opportunity

General Motors Research and Development put that challenge before researchers and students from the FUTURE LAB at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Israel. The task: Conceptualize new ways to help rear seat passengers, particularly children, have a richer experience on the road.

The Windows of Opportunity (WOO) Project was inspired by psychological studies indicating car passengers often feel disconnected from their environment, GM asked the Bezalel students to turn car windows into interactive displays capable of stimulating awareness, nurturing curiosity and encouraging a stronger connection with the world outside the vehicle.
"Traditionally, the use of interactive displays in cars has been limited to the driver and front passenger, but we see an opportunity to provide a technology interface designed specifically for rear seat passengers," said Tom Seder, GM R&D lab group manager for human-machine interface. "Advanced windows that are capable of responding to vehicle speed and location could augment real world views with interactive enhancements to provide entertainment and educational value."

Since GM has no immediate plans to put interactive display windows into production vehicles, the R&D team gave free reign to the Bezalel students to create applications without concern whether they could be mass produced. Bezalel is Israel’s oldest institute of higher education and one of the more prestigious schools of its kind in the world.

Recently in one of our assignment we have utilized STUFF function of SQL Server 2005. So just want to share the same.

Stuff is very simple function to delete specified length of symbols and insert new symbols in string.

We can say it’s a next version for REPLACE function.

Resolution for error: “Failed to access IIS metabase” while browsing a web site from local host on XP machine with IIS 5.1 version

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Follow following steps to resolve the issue -

1. Unregistered all the versions of ASP.NET with command "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis –ua".

2. Deleted the ASPNET account from "Local Users and Group – Users".

3. Then registered ASP.NET 2.0 with IIS using "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis –i".

4. Gave permissions to the ASPNET account using "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis –ga machinename\ASPNET".

5. Reset the IIS and that resolved the issue for ASP.NET 2.0.

6. We registered ASP.NET 1.1 with IIS as well using command "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_regiis –i".

7. Reset the IIS.

After following the above steps we configured virtual directory versions as required and test both ASP.NET 1.1 and ASP.NET 2.0 application.

Everything will work fine as expected.

Main CAUSE:

This problem occurs because the process model user account (in our case, ASPNET) does not have the correct user rights for the required system files and folders to run the ASP.NET worker process.

How to maintain work and life Balance

In this fast moving life we are surrounded by many pressures that we’ve to deal with every other day. Especially for urban working women, running a home and handling the tight deadlines at work can really be quite a task. Here are few suggestions that can be effective in maintaining a better balancing while playing both the roles.

1. Time management

The time-waster in you steal your productivity in the form of reading email, net surfing, or making personal calls. As a result, you work overtime, more than 10 hours a day. Anonymous Types  in Visual Basic

Visual Basic 2008 introduces anonymous types, which enable you to create objects without writing a class definition for the data type. Instead, the compiler generates a class for you. The class has no usable name, inherits directly from Object, and contains the properties you specify in declaring the object. Because the name of the data type is not specified, it is referred to as an anonymous type.

The following example declares and creates variable product as an instance of an anonymous type that has two properties, Name and Price.

' Variable product is an instance of a simple anonymous type.

Dim product = New With {Key .Name = "paperclips", .Price = 1.29}

Declaring an Anonymous Type

The declaration of an instance of an anonymous type uses an initializer list to specify the properties of the type. You can specify only properties when you declare an anonymous type, not other class elements such as methods or events. In the following example, product1 is an instance of an anonymous type that has two properties: Name and Price.

' Variable product1 is an instance of a simple anonymous type.

Dim product1 = New With {.Name = "paperclips", .Price = 1.29}

Key Properties

Equality

Instances of anonymous types can be equal only if they are instances of the same anonymous type. The compiler treats two instances as instances of the same type if they meet the following conditions:

• They are declared in the same assembly.
• Their properties have the same names, the same inferred types, and are declared in the same order. Name comparisons are not case-sensitive.
• The same properties in each are marked as key properties.
• At least one property in each declaration is a key property.

An instance of an anonymous types that has no key properties is equal only to itself.

Read-Only Values

The values of key properties cannot be changed. For example, in prod8 in the previous example, the Name and Price fields are read-only, but OnHand can be changed.

        ' prod8.Name = "clamps"

        ' OnHand is not a Key property. Its value can be changed.

        prod8.OnHand = 22

Here are the top 10 reasons why 10 reasons why SQL Server 2008 is going to rock.

10.  Plug-in model for SSMS.   SSMS 2005 also had a plug-in model, but it was not published, so the few developers that braved that environment were flying blind.  Apparently for 2008, the plug-in model will be published and a thousand add-ins will bloom. 

9.  Inline variable assignment.  I often wondered why, as a language, SQL languishes behind the times.  I mean, it has barely any modern syntactic sugar.  Well, in this version, they are at least scratching the the tip of the iceberg. 

Instead of:

DECLARE @myVar int 

SET @myVar = 5

You can do it in one line:

DECLARE @myVar int = 5

8.  C like math syntax.  SET @i += 5.  Enough said.  They finally let a C# developer on the SQL team. 

7.  Auditing.  It’s a 10 dollar word for storing changes to your data for later review, debugging or in response to regulatory laws.  It’s a thankless and a mundane task and no one is ever excited by the prospect of writing triggers to handle it.  SQL Server 2008 introduces automatic auditing, so we can now check one thing off our to do list.

6.  Compression.  You may think that this feature is a waste of time, but it’s not what it sounds like.  The release will offer row-level and page-level compression.  The compression mostly takes place on the metadata.  For instance, page compression will store common data for affected rows in a single place. 

The metadata storage for variable length fields is going to be completely crazy: they are pushing things into bits (instead of bytes).  For instance, length of the varchar will be stored in 3 bits. 

Anyway, I don’t really care about space savings – storage is cheap.  What I do care about is that the feature promised (key word here "promises") to reduce I/O and RAM utilization, while increasing CPU utilization.  Every single performance problem I ever dealt with had to do with I/O overloading.  Will see how this plays out.  I am skeptical until I see some real world production benchmarks.

5.  Filtered Indexes.  This is another feature that sounds great – will have to see how it plays out.  Anyway, it allows you to create an index while specifying what rows are not to be in the index.  For example, index all rows where Status! = null.  Theoretically, it’ll get rid of all the dead weight in the index, allowing for faster queries. 

4.  Resource governor.  All I can say is FINALLY.  Sybase has had it since version 12 (that’s last millennium, people).  Basically it allows the DBA to specify how much resource (e.g. CPU/RAM) each user is entitled to.  At the very least, it’ll prevent people, with sparse SQL knowledge from shooting off a query with a Cartesian product and bringing down the box.

Actually Sybase is still ahead of MS on this feature.  Its ASE server allows you to prioritize one user over another – a feature that I found immensely useful.

3.  Plan freezing.  This is a solution to my personal pet peeve. Sometimes SQL Server decides to change its plan on you (in response to data changes, etc…).  If you’ve achieved your optimal query plan, now you can stick with it.  Yeah, I know, hints are evil, but there are situations when you want to take a hammer to SQL Server – well, this is the chill pill.

2.  Processing of delimited strings.   This is awesome and I could have used this feature…well, always.  Currently, we pass in delimited strings in the following manner:

exec sp_MySproc 'murphy,35;galen,31;samuels,27;colton,42'

Then the stored proc needs to parse the string into a usable form – a mindless task.

In 2008, Microsoft introduced Table Value Parameters (TVP). 

CREATE TYPE PeepsType AS TABLE (Name varchar(20), Age int) 

DECLARE @myPeeps PeepsType 

INSERT @myPeeps SELECT 'murphy', 35 

INSERT @myPeeps SELECT 'galen', 31

And the sproc would look like this:

CREATE PROCEDURE sp_MySproc2(@myPeeps PeepsType READONLY) ...

The advantage here is that you can treat the Table Type as a regular table, use it in joins, etc.  Say goodbye to all those string parsing routines.

1. Intellisense in the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).  This has been previously possible in SQL Server 2000 and 2005 with use of 3rd party add-ins like SQL Prompt ($195).  But these tools are a horrible hack at best (e.g. they hook into the editor window and try to interpret what the application is doing). 

Built-in intellisense is huge – it means new people can easily learn the database schema as they go.

If you ever get a message like this when trying to create a diagram in SQL 2005
“Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTHORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects.”

Here’s step by step what you have to do:

1. Take time before you react. Study any give situation carefully, think about it and come up with a plan. This is better way to respond than being hasty.
2. Prioritize tasks, focus on tasks which are linked to your most immediate objective.
3. Direct your energy toward situations where you can affect the outcome and don’t spend time worrying about what you cannot change. Successful people focus on tasks which they can control and let go of the rest.
Winners narrow their efforts only to what will help them win. So recognize what you can control and what you can’t.
4. Take the help of others. You can seek the input of other people before reaching any decision. You may also delegate some tasks to others if you have a tight schedule. Decide which tasks can be delegated to other people and do so.

8. Keep Your Mind In The Present. Winners maintain mental focus in the present. The here and now is where you perform, not the regrets of the past or the uncertainty of the future. Focus on what you are doing, when you do it. You can keep your mind in the present by concentrating fully on the task at hand while you are performing it.  If you are focused on the present, you can avoid fears and doubts.
9. Focus on the task and not the outcome. Achievers keep their eye on the journey and not the goal. Having objectives is helpful, but when you execute, stay focused on the process. You cannot completely control the outcome as it can depend on many other factors, some of which may not be in your hands. (Remember tip#3).
